Camino Catalán/Chemin Catalan/Camí Catalá
Narbonne-Perpignan-Montserrat-Pina de Ebro
Various routes have been created or are planned linking Narbonne and French Catalonia with Montserrat and the Ebro valley.
On the French side, the Roussillon Amis de St-Jacques are developing a route linking Narbonne and Perpignan via Monastir del Camp to the Spanish border at the Pyrenean pass at Panissars (near the modern Pertús/Perthus pass). This will eventually link from the Arles/Toulouse route, and see Vallespir/Col d'Arès and Têt valley pages for routes using passes further W.
On the Spanish side, a waymarked route, roughly following the Via Augusta, continues via Girona and Barcelona to Montserrat (ca 200km). It then continues on via Lleida/Lérida to the Ruta del Ebro at Pina de Ebro (250km).
From Boadella d'Emporda NW of Figueres a variant heads W to the Col d'Arès route at Sant Pau de Seguries.
Various Catalan towns link into the main Camino Catalán:
- from L'Hospitalet de Llobregat to Montserrat; see the website of the Hospitalet Amigos for a description and guide
- the Camino/Camì Vendrellenc, following the Ruta del Cister from El Vellat to Lleida, has been created by the Lira Vendrellenca Amigos; a detailed guide is available from porloscaminosdesantiago.com
- from Tarragona to Lleida
- the GR65-5 links Tarragona with Mequinenza
The Catalan government is coordinating support of these routes under a project called Camins Sagrats. The basis of this will be a route from the 9th-century monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, scheduled for 2010, via Figueres, Girona, Vic and Manresa to Montserrat. Spurs will include the other routes developed by the various Amics.
