Via Regia
Brzeg-Wroclaw-Görlitz-Leipzig-Vacha
420km (approx)
The Via Regia was an important medieval trade route, from Kiev to Cologne. A route based on this is currently being developed.
In Poland, it is known as the Drogo Sw. Jakub Via Regia. Part 1, from Brzeg via Wroclaw to the German/Polish border at Görlitz, is now open. Longer term, it should be extended from Jaroslaw near the Ukrainian border, via Kraków - see Malopolska site.
In Germany, the section from Görlitz via Leipzig, Erfurt and Eisenach to Vacha-an-der-Werre on the Thüringen/Hessen border is also known as the Ökumenischer Pilgerweg.
See separate page for the extension west via Marburg and Siegen to Cologne, and see Fulda-Würzburg route for a variation south from Vacha.
