Although at one time this site was used commercially for my business, I now no longer use it much for that, and today it largely reflects some of my interests. Unlike many other sites which are set up or revamped all at once, this one has evolved over the last 10 or 12 years, and each time I have put up another part of the site it has often been with a different style or layout to other parts of the site. This has led to it being a bit disjointed and piecemeal. I have now gone for a more unified look, using the Symfony application framework. Symfony is a very sophisticated system, so strictly speaking is overkill for the bits and pieces on this site, but the software interests me, and it's a sort of 'proof of concept'. There's a tutorial on the conversion process in the 'Symfony tutorial' section, which may interest other developers who use the framework.
As you will gather, I'm a great believer in 'Keep It Simple'. IMHO, most websites these days are too full of unnecessary clutter, with ads and flash images, YouTube videos, analytics and goodness knows what else to slow the process down and delay rendering of webpages. You will find none of that here, not even many images (apart from maps). You should be able to display most pages on screens of all sizes, and on browsers with minimal capabilities.
