Walking

cat

‘Cheshire Puss,’ Alice began, rather timidly. ‘Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?’
‘That depends a good deal on where you want to get to’, said the Cat.
‘I don’t much care where’ said Alice ‘so long as I get somewhere.’
‘Oh, you’re sure to do that,’ said the Cat, ‘if you only walk long enough.’

Walk is a village in eastern Belgium (here’s a (rather grainy) photo). It’s also something I do a lot. I’ve been going on long-distance walks for over 30 years now, so there’s some tips based on my experience in the menu (”Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes” Oscar Wilde).

I used to write a column of news of long-distance paths, particularly in continental Europe, for the Long Distance Walkers Association. At one time, I envisaged continuing this online, but there are so many LDPs these days and the web provides such an easy way of finding out about them, that I've really abandoned the project, and no longer keep track of new developments. In any case, I find myself drawn more and more to the paths based on historical roads from town to town represented by the modern craze for pilgrimage routes, rather than the more traditional LDPs which tend to be countryside/mountain walks that avoid towns and cities. However, I keep the old pages in case anyone finds them of use, and will add anything I come across that may be of interest (see menu).

If you're interested in the walks I have so far completed, see 'my walks' in the menu.

Always pleased to hear from fellow lunatics.
